English and French Boxers (1903) - IMDbPro

When will this stupid SAVATE censorship stop? in 21st century. Incredible.
Please let us see this video.
Comment:
Something new in boxing. An Englishman and a Frenchman come together, and as the Englishman lands hard on the Frenchman's jaw, the Frenchman goes to the floor on his hands, and lands with both feet on the Englishman's solar plexus. The Frenchman fights with hands and feet, and it is with difficulty the Englishman can ward off all the blows. Very unique and interesting. Written by Edison Catalog

Letter from GAISF President Mr Hein Verbruggen to the President of the NOC of Thailand in regard to the 1st Asian Martial Arts Games in Bangkok, April
To:
Gen. Yuthasak Sasiprapha
President
Olympic Committee of Thailand
226, Banampawan Sriayuthaya Rd, Dusit
BANGKOK 10300
Thailand
5th January 2009
Dear President,
We have been informed that your Olympic Committee is organising the 1st Asian artial Arts Games to be held in Bangkok coming April. Though acknowledging your right to organise this event, we must state that we are deeply concerned by the fact that you seem to invite a Muay Thai Federation, which is NOT recognized by GAISF as the official International Federation for Muay Thai (which is IFMA as you know).
We are aware of the fact that you do not wish to honour the official GAISF recognition of IFMA and we are equally aware of existing litigation in this case in your country. From our side, however we ask your understanding for the fact that GAISF member IFs start to have serious problems with the fact that they are invited in events where their athletes have to compete against athletes that are members of so-called “dissident IFs”. With “dissident IFs” we do not mean anything negative, but we just want to indicate the fact that these Federations are active within sports that have already an IF that – after thorough investigation and due diligence - has been recognized by GAISF as THE official international governing instance for that specific sport. This GAISF recognition brings also important obligations, such as e.g. acceptance and application of the WADA-Anti Doping Code. You will easily appreciate that - as a result - GAISF IFs have a clear preference to participate in events and championships in which other GAISF IFs exclusively partcipate.
GAISF has 13 Martial Arts & Combat Sports IFs as members and we have installed since several years a Working Group of all these IFs in order to discuss items and projects of common interest. During a meeting recently held in Moscow, Presidents, Secretary Generals and/or other representatives of these 13 IFs have clearly voiced concern about the participation rules of the coming up Asian Martial Arts Games. For the time being they have therefore decided not to confirm definitely their participation. Given the dates of your event (April), we understand that this is a rather urgent matter and that this may present serious practical problems. We are therefore willing to meet and discuss this important issue with you on short notice in order to find suitable and practical solutions. We inform you that this issue has been raised in a separate letter to the President of OCA who receives also a copy of this letter.
We thank you for your attention to this matter and we look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Hein Verbruggen

French invented modern sport wrestling

NOW YOU KNOW WHY INTEGRAL DRESS IN SAVATE AND WRESTLING.
Source: http://wapedia.mobi/en/Greco-Roman_wrestling
Greco-Roman wrestling actually derived from a 19th century French form of show-wrestling popular for its high throws. It is speculated that many styles of European folk wrestling may have spurred the origins of Greco-Roman wrestling. The British wrestling styles that originated in Cumberland and Westmoreland have some holds that are not allowed in Greco-Roman, but restricted arm holds to the upper torso, and was quite similar to Greco-Roman. The styles of Devon and Cornwall also had the wrestlers using their holds above waist level. According to FILA, a Napoleonic soldier named Exbroyat first developed the style. Exbroyat performed in fairs and called his style of wrestling "flat hand wrestling" to distinguish it from other forms of hand-to-hand combat that allowed striking. In 1848, Exbroyat established the rule that no holds below the waist were to be allowed; neither were painful holds or torsions that would hurt the opponent. "Flat hand wrestling" or "French wrestling" (as the style became known) developed all throughout Europe and became a popular sport. The Italian wrestler Basilio Bartoletti first coined the term "Greco-Roman" for the sport to underline the interest in "ancient values." Many others in the 18th and 19th centuries sought to add value to their contemporary athletic practices by finding some connections with ancient counterparts. So, it was widely believed soon enough that Greco-Roman wrestling emerged from a Greek wrestling competition known as "upright wrestling" in which only upper body holds were allowed. The 18th century work Gymnastics for Youth by Johann Friedrich Guts Muths described a form of schoolboy wrestling called "orthopale" (used by Plato to describe the standing part of wrestling) that did not mention any lower-body holds. Real ancient wrestling was quite different; see Greek wrestling.
Was Savate’s Drop Kick from Pro Wrestling?
Unless you’re a youngster, you’re probably familiar with the numerous books Bruce Tegner published primarily in the 1960s, one of which was a text on savate. Therein, Tegner demonstrated first a jumping drop kick from the standing position and then a leaping sidekick from a moving start. Click on the thumbnail below for a close-up:

So where did it come from? Well, the obvious jumping ability and the high knee chambering does remind the reader of savate. A further reading of the history section of Tegner’s book reveals that he did go to Quebec at the age of fourteen for a year to learn savate from Jean-Claude Gautier. Tegner was born in 1929, so this was during WWII. Tragically, Gautier later died in that war as did so many other French savateurs. In fact, savate instruction was so severely depleted at that time that the art was nearly lost.
While Tegner may have very well learned the drop kick from Gautier, it may instead have been an anachronism. Tegner did not publish his savate book until seventeen years after his early training with Gautier. In the preceding thirty years, wrestling had introduced the drop kick as part of its aerial theatrics. Then once WWII began wrestlers were tasked with much of the hand-to-hand combat training and later published their methods, often including lip service to savate methods (think D’Eliscu, Cosneck, etc.).
“Jumping Joe” Savoldi had begun using the drop kick in the squared circle as early as 1933 and took credit for its invention. Likewise, wrestler Abe Coleman claims he invented the drop kick after seeing kangaroos on a visit to Australia in 1930. Either way, the method was firmly established well before Tegner went to Canada to learn savate.
In 1934, the press made a to-do over an anonymous wrestler complaining about Savoldi’s use of the drop kick. (Washington Post, Jan. 30, 1934). This was likely Jim Londos complaining before his January 31, 1934 rematch with Savoldi. Savoldi won the rematch after previously double-crossing Londos earlier in 1933, although in the meantime Savoldi had lost the title to Jim Browning.
But back to the relevant point: in 1934, the press referred to the drop kick as the “American savate,” giving initial credence to the idea that the drop kick may have been a technique introduced to wrestling from savate, but I think that also is a red herring. My take is that the term savate was just being used as a generic term for a foot technique in the article because of savate’s strong association with kicking techniques. I don’t believe the term was used to indicate an actual connection to savate.
Therefore, I conclude that Tegner’s use of the drop kick was idiosyncratic and not a widespread technique commonly used in savate. I suspect that instead the drop kick was incorporated at some point from the influence of wrestling. I’d love to be proven wrong, though, so if any of you savateurs can set me straight, don’t hesitate to speak up!

International Martial Arts Sports Delegates Visit FISU HQ
Today, January 23rd, delegates from the International Martial Arts Sports Commission from GAISF visited the FISU Headquarters in Brussels. Mr. Patrick Van Campenhout (Treasurer International Wushu Federation) and Mr. August Dragt (board member International Aikido Federation) met with FISU Secretary-General Eric Saintrond and a number of FISU staff members for a working session. The Martial Arts Sports Commission will stage the first Martial Arts Games in 2010 in Beijing, China. As FISU already incorporates six martial arts sports in its sports program (judo, taekwondo, karate, wrestling, boxing and in 2010 for the first time savate) the Martial Arts delegates consider FISU as an important partner for their educational program and the academic development level of martial arts sports.

Jérôme Huon in Finland

From 9th to 11th Jan 2009, Jérôme Huon was in Finland for a seminar for savate instructors. He enjoyed a warm welcome and excellent organisation for the seminar. His program for the development of the trainers included:
educational methods, processing of information, planning of training programmes and 2 training classes.
Jérôme was impressed by the organisation of Savate in Finland, with 1200 members, 120 lessons per week and about 40 teachers. He believes this must be one of the biggest clubs in the world.
Jérôme has been involved in Savate for 20 years, as a fighter and now as a trainer at the "Pôle Espoir Ile de France de Savate boxe française" at Eaubonne, France.

How did you start doing Savate? ![]() With my friends, we often went to a club and then the trainer’s son found that I had some abilities and he told that if I invest more of myself in boxing, I could go far. He took me to Courbertin and I told me that one day I would box there. I remember my first fight. I was 17 and I was matched against a 27-year-old boxer. At the beginning, I did not have to fight but out of pride, I accepted. I lost by KO but I returned to training the next Monday, I did not want to give up! How long did you do Savate? I have boxed for 15 years but not only savate, I also do kickboxing, full contact, Chauss’Fight, etc. I remember my first tournament in kickboxing, I had lied about my record of achievements to “impress” people. That was the way I managed to get into this tournament that I eventually won. Up to now, I’ve always been lucky to fight against opponents with the same “stature “ as me, which allows great fights. I remember, in particular, the final of the 2006 European Championship when Gilles LE DUIGOU, who was still the Vice-president of the French Savate Federation at that time, told me that my fight had been the most beautiful he had ever seen ! I was very pleased to hear this from an expert, these are strong moments that I will never forget. Passion or necessity? What are your future prospects? ![]() |

Tom Harinck (Netherland) - Chakuriki & savate

http://www.kernerteam.info/article.php3?id_article=6
1975 - first teacher of savate from Netherland with diploma of French boxing - savate
1976 - co-founder of NKBB (dutch kick boxing association)
1980 - trained German anti terorist group and Netherland special forces
1984 - Tom Harinck created WMTA (World Muay Thai Association)
1985 - WMTA has 47 member states (countries)
1993 - Branco Cikatic (Croatia) become first champion of first K1 tournament in Japan
1995 - Peter Aerts (also his fighter) - K1 world champion
It was January 1972 that Thom Harinck founded the world's most famous Muay Thai and Kickboxing Gym, Chakuriki. Chakuriki is a Japanese word which means as much as "the power derived from". Originally Harinck, who trained Mas Oyama's Kyokushinkai karate for a short while, meant the Chakuriki-style to be a mixture of traditional karate, boxing, wrestling, judo and jiu jitsu, coupled with rigid meditation sessions. Another part of the style was handling the traditional kobudo weapons such as bo, manriki gusari, nunchaku and the sai.
The founding of Chakuriki was the beginning of a new era in the Martial Arts, because all the above coupled with the no-nonsense discipline that Harinck demanded from his fighters soon started to show results.
Again and again fighters from other disciplines all over Europe were beaten soundly by the Chakuriki stable and gradually they obtained a fearsome reputation. These results made Harinck's fame spread all over the world and eventually reached the cradle of Muay Thai, the Lumpini Stadium in Bangkok. The Thais did not hesitate and challenged Chakuriki by inviting them to Bangkok to take the ultimate test and fight them man-to-man on traditional Muay Thai rules.
Of course the Dutch accepted. They had heard vaguely about Muay Thai, but had no idea what they should expect. They were strong and had beaten almost every famous fighter in Europe and America, so what could they have to fear?
How rude was their awakening! With five they went and with five they lost. The longest fight lasted three rounds. But don’t expect Harinck to be disillusioned. On the contrary. One could say he underwent a process of "Spiritual rebirth".
He is a sportsman so he accepted defeat and instead of going home and licking his wounds, it was there and then that he decided that he could learn a lot from his victors. He went back many times to train and the results were evident. Next to Thailand there are no stronger fighters in the World than the Dutch. The mutual respect between the Thai and Harinck resulted in the founding of the World Muay Thai Association in January 1984. Mr. Montri Mongkolsawad, then the manager of the Rajadamnern Stadium became the Honorary president for life and Thom Harinck was nominated as President.
In more than 25 years, Chakuriki has come a long way. From a small but much disputed school in down-town Amsterdam they grew to become the World's most famous Muay Thai and Kickboxing Gym with even their own clothing line which sells very well.
At the moment Harinck is one of the biggest promoters in the World but as always he is still available for seminars.

World University Sambo Cup 2008 - FISU patronage
The 2008 World University Sambo Cup, an event under FISU Patronage took place from December 5th to 8th in Kaunas, Lithuania. 91 student-athletes (men & women) from 10 countries took part on this event (Latvia, Estonia, France, Senegal, Russia, Czech Republic, Romania, Georgia, Lithuania). Kaunas University of Technology, the Lithuanian Student Sport Association and the Lithuanian Sambo Federation were the main organizers of this event.
Competitions were opened by Mr. Sergey Eliseev (RUS), Vice-President of FIAS (the World Sambo Federation) and President of the European Sambo Federation. Mr. Andrius Kupcinskas, Mayor of Kaunas, officials from the Lithuanian Student Sport Association, Kaunas University of Technology and other organizations attended the opening ceremony.
18 sets of medals (9 for men and 9 for women) were distributed between the participants. The strongest women's team was Russia, followed by Lithuania and France. The strongest men's team was also Russia, trailed by Georgia and Lithuania.
Olga Usoltseva (Russia) and Kakha Mamulashvili (Georgia) were nominated for special prizes for best technique. Bernard Nicolas (France) and Cherar Adriana (Romania) were nominated with prizes for will attempts in the contests.
During the competitions team leaders, coaches and referees took part in a sambo seminar.

Club Phoenix 13 - technical savate seminar

Why the best clubs in France regularly do savate clinics (boxe francaise technical seminars)?
And members are prepared to pay 22 Euros (+5 for non-members). I can tell you that this seminar taxes are very low for fighters like Djibrine and Ismaila. If they would offer this technique outside savate market - for example as kickboxing in Italy - this tax should be 50 Euro or more per person.

Seminar in Dortmund, Germany 15th March 2009, WTF and ITF taekwondo
One of the 3 biggest ITF international taekwondo federations (all with the same name and of course non-olympic) - Jung Hwa group.
During a meeting between the WTF and ITF, Mr. Fimiani, President of the ITF-NAG Germany, proposed that a seminar should be mutually arranged by both ITF and WTF in Dortmund. This proposal was warmly welcomed by Grand Master Whang Chae Pok, 9th. DAN WTF, one of Gen. Choi Hong Hi’s earliest students, and Master Peter Sanders 7th. DAN ITF.
Photo: Dario Fimiani with GM Whang Chae Pok 9th.DAN WTF and Henk Zonsfeld
WTF and ITF agreed to a common slogan during a competition held in South Korea 24.06.2008 – “WI are one” - (Spelt WI, WTF and ITF) a thought that is making its round worldwide.
Mr. Fimiani wishes to enforce this thought in Germany.
For Mr.Fimiani and Grand Master Whang Chae Pok there is no doubt that Choi Hong Hi is the origin of Taekwon-Do (1918-2002). Taekwondo may develop into many directions; its root however, remains the same.
Mr. Fimiani is very happy to be allowed to invite all associations for the 15th. March, 2009 to Dortmund to the Seminar which will be held by Grand Master Master Whang Chae Pok 9th. DAN WTF and Master Peter Sanders 7th.DAN.ITF
Free sleeping is provided for in the hall.
AMHED CHAIDI (MOR) stage in Genova, Italy

and it looked like this:
With Marco Nacci (Accademia Europea - Milano) friend of Silvia La Notte and Ubaldo Pascini (Judo-Savate man who don't want to cooperate with CSEN Italian sport federation but only with ACSI) and of course as we see on pictures - friend of Giorgio Ali who is CSEN savate instructor.
Nobody really understand Italian relations :).

Ollie Batts - interview in Martial Edge

Martial Edge: When and where did you get involved with martial arts?
Ollie Batts: It was a couple of years ago at least [laughs!]. Actually I started out in Judo whilst I was still at school. I can't remember exactly how long I trained in Judo for, but it wasn't longer than a couple of years, at most. After I left school I did a bit of weight lifting for a time before going back into the martial arts around the time of Bruce Lee and Enter the Dragon. I restarted in Taekwondo, in late 1973. Shortly after I got my green belt I also began training in Hapkido, under the same instructor, Mok Yang Kim from Korea, who was a master in both arts.
Martial Edge: What exactly is Savate, and what does it offer the students who practice it?
Ollie Batts: There is actually two sides to Savate. On the one hand it is a sporting system, in some ways resembling kickboxing (although the French hate that analogy) and on the other, it is a system of self-defence for real life. Some people specialise in one of those areas only, others know and practice both sides of the art. Sport Savate, has many names, including Boxe Francaise Savate, Boxe Savate, La Boxe, or simply 'Savate'. The street art also has a variety of names, depending on who you happen to speak to: Savate Defence, Street Savate, and Dans de la Rue, literally, 'Dance of the street'. Robert Paturel calls his art 'Street Boxing'.
Martial Edge: Tell us about the Cambridge Academy of Martial Arts and the other styles you teach.
Ollie Batts: We founded the Academy in 1989. I had spent a total of 16 years studying Korean Martial Arts by then and wanted to broaden my horizons. (I was also rather fed up with the politics!) I started to attend as many training seminars as I could afford, and also learnt to box a bit - not to any kind of standard of course, as I was already starting to grow long teeth and ever shorter hair [laughs!]. Now, some 16 years later, I am qualified to teach Filipino Kali and JKD Concepts, under Rick Faye of the Minnesota Kali Group (USA), although it was the phenomenal Rick Young in Edinburgh who first certified me - someone needed too! Although I regret that I don't see Rick Young that often, I still host regular seminars in Cambridge with Rick Faye. In addition to that, and where the Filipino martial arts are concerned, we have several intensive training sessions each year specifically in the art of Doce Pares Eskrima, under Danny Guba. Danny is a tenth degree Grand Master and a former World Champion, both in full contact Eskrima and in the forms competition. I am now qualified directly under Grand Master Danny Guba to teach and promote the Guba Doce Pares Multi-Style system. Further to this, I am also qualified to teach Combat Sombo, through Grand Master Martin Clarke of the British Sombo Federation (BSF). Where Savate is concerned, I am now one of the Senior Instructors (a Moniteur, not yet a Professeur) in the Great Britain Savate Federation, as well as being the current GBSF President. We are of course fully affiliated to the International Savate Federation (FIS), which means that my grade is universally recognised worldwide.
Martial Edge: With such a busy teaching schedule, what do you do for personal development?
Ollie Batts: If you mean in the martial arts, I eat, drink, think and sleep martial arts. They are now an inseparable and integral part of me. In order to develop I train with high level instructors as often as I can to further my progression. The only problem is, there aren't enough hours in the day, days in the week, weeks in the month, or months in the year! So it can be a complete juggling act. Sometimes I have to put one area on the back burner whilst I refresh and try to progress in another. I am all too aware just how easy it is to slip back in ones development at times. I also learn from new students. Sometimes they have specific skills, like the young Brazilian Ju-jitsu Champion who trained with us a few years back, and sometimes I can learn from someone who has had no martial arts training whatsoever. That's because someone with no training can be unpredictable and awkward. It's like the story of the martial arts instructor who asked a new female student to attack him with a dummy knife. When she suddenly plunged it into his gut from an unusual angle he said, "No, not like that!" I had to laugh at that one!
Martial Edge: As an instructor what core attributes do you look to develop in an individual?
Ollie Batts: That's a tricky question, not least because different people turn up to practice at different stages in their lives, and they all have differing wants, needs and aspirations to begin with. Sometimes they will also change direction completely when they see just how much there is out there. I do my best (and I'm all too well aware that I sometimes fall short of the mark) to help each person to attain the goals that they have set themselves. If I don't think I'm the best person to give someone what they most need, I'll try to point them in the direction of someone else who might be better suited to further their individual development.
Martial Edge: What would you say to people about what they should be looking to achieve in their martial arts training?
Ollie Batts: Firstly, enjoy your training. Next, keep an open mind as to what direction you want to go. Never be afraid to ask questions, or to question those answers - just do it as diplomatically as possible, not by being rude. Try to see through the bullsh*t in the martial arts. If you find a good instructor, treat him or her well. (Training partners likewise!) Don't be afraid to move on if things aren't working out. But try not to make too many enemies along the way. Life's too short!

Combat Sombo is the system of hand-to-hand fighting used by Soviet Spetsnaz (Special Forces) Troops. It offers a plain and simple approach to learning and practising fighting skills for combat and self-defence.
This is the first book written in english on this fascinating russian art. It contains hundreds of illustrations, with detailed instructions on how to apply locks, holds, takedowns, throws and escapes.
