Another JUDO men as Savate masters

Be careful - texts are very old and just shows how popular savate was in Black Belt in USA.


Bob Howard was born in Molton, Alabama, but attended high school in Cleveland, Ohio. The 32 year old assistant instructor of the Cleveland School of Self Defense and Judo makes his livelihood as a truck driver. He was affiliated with the Jiu Jitsu Black Belt Federation of the U. S. A. and ranked 1st Dan Black Belt in ju jutsu (1963) and 1st Dan Black Belt in savate (1963). Married.


Leonard Simms, 28 - assistant instructor at the Cleveland School of Self-Defense and Judo in Ohio. He was born in Cleveland and attended John Adams High School there. Member of the Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt Federation of the U.S.A. and wears a 1st-Degree Black Belt in the French foot fighting art of savate. He also holds a 1st-Dan Black Belt in ju-jitsu which he received in 1963. He is married and makes his living as a grinder.


Dr. Evan Baltazzi, 45, a research chemist, lives with his wife and three children in Brookfield, III. He holds doctorates in physical science from the Sorbonne in France and in philosophy from Oxford Univ. in England. He is a 4th-Dan Judo Black Belt, a 3rd-Dan in Yoseikan aikido. His training under Kawaishi in France included ju-jitsu. He studied savate and was on the '46-'47 Sorbonne fencing team. He was captain of the Oxford Univ. Judo Team, '52-'54 and now instructs the West Suburban YMCA judo-aikido club in La Grange, Ill.


Harvey Torok, 23, was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and presently lives there with his wife. He attended John Adams High School in Cleveland and makes his living as an upholsterer. In 1964 he earned his 1st-Degree Brown Belt in the French foot-fighting art of savate under chief instructor Frank Kovacs at the Cleveland School of Self-Defense, 2916 East 116th Street. He is now an assistant instructor there. He is affiliated with the Jiu Jitsu Black Belt Federation of the USA.


Ray L. Kaufman, 24, was born in Cleveland, Ohio, where he lives now with his wife. He graduated from high school in Shaker Heights, Ohio, and studied economics and business administration at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio. He makes his living as an electrical drafting designer and is co-owner and director of the Cleveland School of Self-Defense and Judo at 2916 East 116th Street. In 1961 he earned 1st-Degree Black Belts in ju-jitsu and in the French foot-fighting art of savate.


Rene La Londe, 34, was born in Montreal, Canada. The head instructor of the Rene La Londe Judo Academy is married and has two children. He is affiliated with the Canadian Black Belt Kodokan Association, is president of the Quebec Judo Black Belt Assn. and is ranked 4th-Dan Black Belt in judo (1963), 1st-Kyu Brown Belt in karate, 3rd-Dan Black Belt in jujitsu (1960) and is an expert in savate.


Frank C. Kovacs, Jr., 15, was born in Austria. He came to the U.S. in 1950 and is attending Benedictine High School in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1964 he was awarded 1st Kyu Brown Belts in ju jitsu and in the French foot fighting art of savate. He also holds a 3rd-Kyu Brown Belt in judo. He works under his father, Frank, Sr., as assistant instructor at the Cleveland School of Self Defense and Judo. He is affiliated with the Ju- Jitsu Black Belt Federation of the USA.
