Concussions Are Bad for Your Brain

California savate - like their news on CALSAVATE - blog. For all though guys who thing that fighting is just a joke.

Hope you like headgear. New medical data suggests that sport-induced concussions (especially from football) can lead to long term brain damage. Obvious, right? Well, it’s the massive extent of the damage that the new findings point to that’s causing doctors (and football players) so much concern:

“Until recently, the best medical definition for concussion was a jarring blow to the head that temporarily stunned the senses, occasionally leading to unconsciousness. It has been considered an invisible injury, impossible to test -- no MRI, no CT scan can detect it.

But today, using tissue from retired NFL athletes culled posthumously, the Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy (CSTE), at the Boston University School of Medicine, is shedding light on what concussions look like in the brain. The findings are stunning. Far from innocuous, invisible injuries, concussions confer tremendous brain damage. That damage has a name: chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).”

CTE has been found in all of the brains of former NFL players who donated their brains for science, revealing instances where the brains of men in their 30s and 40s resemble that of 80 year olds. The article does not discuss boxing or any kind of martial art related concussions, but we know they happen frequently to fighters. More to consider about what you’ll be risking for a fight career. Think this is all hype? Keep Muhammad Ali in mind. Link
